Using Eco Friendly Paint On Your Interior

You have probably heard a lot lately about more and more people using eco friendly products and paint is no exception. Most all major paint manufactures have begin to create “green” or eco friendly interior paints. So exactly what is a eco friendly paint and how is it different from most of the traditional paints that are used today? Environmentally friendly paints that are produced today have much lower VOC’s or volatile organic compounds compared to the traditional paints. It will normally contain much less ammonia as well. Eco friendly paints usually have little or no odor which is also a big concern with many people such as  those who are sensitive to chemicals, people with certain allergies,  babies or small children and the elderly. While there are advantages to using a environmentally friendly paint when painting the interior of your home, there are some disadvantages also. It cost the paint manufactures who make these paints more money through research and production of eco friendly paints and their cost is passed along to the consumer. So this type of paint is usually cost substantially more than the traditional paint. Also, there are some that believe that the eco friendly paint is not as durable as a standard latex paint is, however I can say that in all the times that I have used this type of paint I have not encountered this problem myself. These are just a few pros and cons in using  environmentally friendly paint products. I would suggest asking your local Birmingham interior painting contractor his advice before deciding what type paint to use.
