If you have any wood rot on the exterior of your home, then this is a problem that should be fixed as soon as possible. Wood rot will usually begin as a small area but will grow and get worse if not properly repaired, which will result in a more costly fix. Wood rot can be caused by a number of things including a leaky roof, damaged or improperly installed flashing, a lack of caulking which will allow water to seep in behind the wood or using poor quality paint. Regardless of the cause of the rot, it must be addressed first or else the problem will return in a short period of time.
Wood rot can occur on anywhere on your home including any trim and siding. If the area is small enough, you may be able to use a wood epoxy in lieu of replacing the wood. Many of the wood epoxies sold today are very durable and offer a good alternative to replacement. However if the rotten area is large, then epoxy is not a good choice and replacing the wood is recommended.
A common problem today is on homes with masonite siding. Masonite siding was commonly used on thousands of houses and while it is a nice looking siding, it is prone to rot.
This is a picture of a job that we completed in Pelham Al. As you can see the house had extensive damage to the masonite siding. All of the damaged or decayed siding was removed and new siding was properly installed. The cause of this damage was a lack of caulking. The caulking on the joints had split and opened up and water began to work in behind the siding which caused all of the damage.
Trim boards such as corner boards, fascia and brick mould are all susceptible to rot if not properly caulked, painted and maintained. If you notice rot in these areas, it’s usually a pretty easy fix. Just don’t allow the rot to continue and get worse.
